Title: Towards Quantitative Simulations of High Power Proton Cyclotrons
Y. Bi
Abstract:
We describe a large scale simulation effort and new features in OPAL, that leads to a better quantitative understanding of the existing PSI high power proton cyclotron facility.
The 1.3 MW of beam power on target gives stringent requirements of the controlled and uncontrolled beam losses. A new particle matter interaction model taking into account
energy loss, small angle multiple Coulomb scattering and nuclear scattering is implemented in OPAL. The new model together with the 3D space charge will increase the predicting
capabilities of OPAL significantly.
We present initial condition for the Ring simulation, obtained from the new time structure measurement and the profile monitors of the IW2 line. By adjusting the injection position and angle, the flattop voltage and phase, very good agreement between the simulation and measurement at the radial probe RRE4 is obtained. The relation between beam intensity and rms beam size, accelerating voltage is studied and compared with measurement. Ongoing effort demonstrating the validity of our model beyond 3 sigma of the beam core will be discussed. This capability is mandatory in the design and operation of the next generation high power proton drivers.
Looking forward to this exiting seminar
Andreas
