Abstract:
The PSI has a program to increase the beam intensity in the proton facility.
To realize this program it is essential to improve the understanding of
the properties of space charge dominated beams in cyclotrons.
One path towards the a better understanding is a direct simulation of the
beam by OPAL-cycl. But direct simulation is time consuming and expensive
in terms of computing power. In order to use the CPU-time with maximum
effectiveness it is essential to have a theory at hand that allows to
determine reasonable 'starting conditions'. That are for instance the
parameters of the beam distribution, i.e. beam sizes and correlations,
which are at least close to some optimum.
In order to gain a better insight into the problem, a simple model of
coupled motion with space charge is presented. The model is based on well
known first order beam TRANSPORT theory. The intention is to compute
the properties of a matched beam in case of space charge dominated
transport and to predict some essential and principle features of
beam matching in case of systems with coupling.
