Hi
I am happy to announce that centrally managed Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 is now declared beta. What does this mean?
production ready
----------------
The central infrastructure is production ready:
- automatic commissioning with Sysdb and bob
- package updates
- management infrastructure with Puppet and Hiera
beta testing
------------
- NFS and AFS are working
- Basic server use cases are working
- Gnome Desktop and NX remote access are working, but there are still some improvements missing
- I have seen XFCE and Icewm running
your [gfa|scicomp|cpt|*] software stack
---------------------------------------
Please test your use cases and software stacks on RHEL8. The installation procedure is documented at https://linux.psi.ch/rhel8/installation.html
Please report any issues you find with the base system to https://jira.psi.ch/projects/PSILINUX/ or directly to me.
Note that the readiness declarations (alpha, beta, production) for RHEL8 only covers the base system and its integration into the PSI environment, but not the suitability to run your software stack.
migration
---------
For the migration the intent is that RHEL7 and RHEL8 hosts can share the same hierarchy in Hiera and thus also the "same" configuration.
In cases where the configuration for RHEL7 or RHEL8 differs, the idea is to have both in parallel in Hiera and Puppet shall select the right one. This has been implemented already for
- selecting package repositories (can be on both or just one of them)
- selecting packages for installation (can be on both or just one of them)
- package repository tag (should be different)
- automatic updates (is different)
For package management details please have a look at https://linux.psi.ch/rhel8/packages.html.
Note that we only support new installations, but not upgrades from existing RHEL7 setups.
More details you find at https://linux.psi.ch/rhel8/
Cheers
Konrad
