Dear Linux admins and users

The Core Linux Team considers the integration of RedHat Enterprise Linux 9 to our environment ready for beta testing. This means we believe that we do not need further breaking changes. And if they would be necessary, then it would be done with announcements, planned migration, etc.

It has been tested with different use cases, but maybe not with your [cas|scicomp|cpt|*] software stack. This is now for you to test. If you encounter problems with the base system, feel free to report them to our team via e-mail linux-eng AT psi.ch or as issue in Gitea[1].

There are following notable changes compared to RHEL8:

- no AFS support
- no Icinga1 support
- Incinga2 monitoring[2] without notifications enabled by default
- stricter access rules for e-accounts, gac-users and ext-users
- start auditd automatically if SELinux is enabled
- new network configuration[3] for static and complex network setups

and for workstation configurations:
- Gnome uses dock extension by default
- Flatpak enabled by default
- mounts /psi.ch (Central Storage Mount)[4] by default
- automatically creates links to U: drive file (partially shared home)[5]
- Wayland is default

Please note that all new features are also available for RHEL8 when configured in Hiera accordingly.

As we got already a lot of feedback during alpha testing, we believe we will be able to go to declare production readiness soon.
