no you need mph even for single core jobs.

it should be no difference, however Apple made changes to 

their tool set and now compilations is very much dependent on the

versions you use. I think with the newest macOS we are not in a

position to clearly define the necessary steps for compilation. The 

colleague in charge is on vacation to give a more complete picture on that

matter, I would go with RH6 for the moment and stay tuned for MacOS.
