Next-Gen Sequencing (NGS) data generated by technologies from, among others, Illumina, 454 Life Sciences and ABI SOLiDs, allows biologists to obtain a systemic view of gene and protein regulatory networks within a cell and across populations.

NGS data requires analysis at three levels

Primary: Generate reads from instrument raw image data. Instrument specific workflows and software programs need to be used in this step.  Secondary: Align and assemble millions of reads for application-specific needs. Multiple computational programs and diverse data formats need to be used in this step. Tertiary: Combine and analyze data to understand biological context - differential _expression_, variants, gene regulation, and gene identification. Multiple software programs and domain expertise are required for this step.

The consequences of the availability of such high throughput data are that both academic and industrial researchers now require world-class NGS bioinformatics services at all levels of NGS data for various downstream applications.
