We need at minimum 2 ingredients:   

1)  every simulation particle hast it own mass and charge. 

2) the integrator needs to be aware of possible  (mass) changes and hence the tilmestep of
    individual particles must be adjustable. 
 
Note to 2): if this is done naively a performance penalty maybe is inevitable

This could potentially be useful for studying Ion bombardment in electron guns as well. I have some data on this from the APS that would be great to try and replicate (at least partially) in simulation so tracking of ions generated in an electron gun would be interesting.
