Hi John,
I had opal in a virtual box (VMWare) running Ubuntu 16.04 before and it was working fine. Personally I find the WSL more comfortable as I can just pop up a terminal and start working without delay. WSL comes as an option with every Windows 10 now, and as far as I know it is not a resource hog unless you need them. You don’t have to specify the resources and it can access the full memory and all cpu’s. I was calculating some e-fields with BEM++ and all processors went into overdrive with 14 GB of Memory allocated… There have been some benchmarking tests I read about online and sometimes it performs better than a VM and sometimes worse. I think in the pure CPU applications it was about the same. A dual-boot Ubuntu will give you better performance, naturally.
Hope this helps, Daniel

Thanks for the useful discussion on setting up OPAL on Windows, I'm finding this very useful. Let's try to summarize this email chain so it can be referenced in the future.
To summarize, there are two successfully tested windows configurations in use on the list: 1. Daniel Winklehner installed Ubuntu on Windows 10 "you can try the WSL" (Windows Subsystem for Linux). 2. Chris Rogers installed ???? on VirtualBox under windows.
Chris: What flavor of Linux are you running inside VirtualBox? Also, would you tell us your system resources and how much you are giving to VirtualBox. Or any other useful details.
Daniel: Are there similar choices of system resources you need to make for WSL and can you tell us a but more about your setup.

You could try running a virtual machine like VirtualBox under windows
